Fruit baits, these baits have long since been discarded by the
angler with more traditional baits taking their place this is not to
say that they still have there place or that they cant be effective
for catching fish, many of the baits that are mentioned below have
accounted for some good catches of Carp, Chub, Bream and Roach and
it is always a little nicer to catch fish on something a bit out of
the ordinary after all any experimentation with bait no matter what
it may be is a step in the right direction and can only bring
greater understanding to the angler.
Banana,
this fruit can be used in many ways all that it requires is a little
imagination and some belief in its ability to catch fish especially
during the summer months, it can be pulped in a liquidiser for
feeding, mashed with a fork or just cut into pieces to feed and use
on the hook, this bait can be a banker for Carp fished on a hair rig
over a bed of hemp and Chub will take it well on the bomb, waggler
or pole, banana is probably best left alone and not flavoured but if
you find that after using it for a while the fish do not respond as
they have in the past then a flavour may just invigorate this bait
once more, try lightly frying it in curry powder or mixed spice or
add some sugar to sweeten it up a bit, if you fancy using something
a little different then give this bait a go.
Strawberry,
this has got to be one of the greatest flavours of all time but why
anglers don't use it as a bait when it is in season I will never
know, strawberries are a fruit which are taken well by most fish
especially when they get a taste for them, again they can be pulped,
mashed or cut into pieces to use on the hook you can also cut a
strawberry into thick slices and then punch pieces out to use on the
hook, use small fruits whole for carp fishing on a hair rig or core
out cylinders using a home made punch, best used in conjunction with
a little ground bait with liquidised strawberries added.
Grapes,
yet another terrific bait that has everything, the right shape, a
good colour and can be purchased in a wide variety of sweetness,
this bait has honestly got the lot when it comes to summer carp
fishing and can be fished on a float, bomb or feeder rig with ease,
I would not recommend chopping up this bait as it will loose its
firmness and become quite hard to fish on the hook unless you
purchase some firm grapes to start with, always buy the seedless
variety using a sweet ground bait or loose feeding whole grapes in
fours and fives.
Apple,
this bait can be a little indifferent on some days it will fish and
on others not, there are that many different variety's that you may
need to experiment to find one which will work on the particular
water that you are fishing, try to use the sweetest of the apples in
summer and a slightly bitter apple towards the autumn, again you can
imagine that this fruit has many possibilities and various ways of
fishing on the hook or on a hair rig, a good way to use the apple is
to cut or punch into different sized pieces and soak in a sweet
apple juice for a couple of hours to give them an extra boost.
Mango,
a good fruit for Bream and roach fishing but you must ensure that
the mango is just in the right state of ripeness to use it
successfully, again cutting it into small pieces and using
liquidised mango for feed tipping this into your swim from a pole
pot with a few hook samples.
Chinese pears,
this fruit is like an apple but a little harder so it will stay on
the hook, fish it as above using the same guidelines as the apple.
Blackberry,
yet another great natural fruit that is no doubt eaten by fish
anyway with so many blackberry bushes overhanging the waters in this
country at certain times of the year, when the blackberry bushes are
out in fruit try picking some and fishing them under the overhanging
bushes on a light waggler or bomb rig, they can even be free lined
if you are not fishing to far out.
Sweet baits,
these baits can be very effective and there are lots of variety's to
choose from some can be used as floaters like marsh mallows or
malteasers and the rest can be used on bomb or feeder rigs, in
general fish do love sweet things like chocolate or caramel and all
sweets contain masses of sugar which the Carp will begin to realise
and after some time they will actively seek out the sweet baits in
order to access it, I don't believe that sweets are considered by
many anglers and you do have to be careful which sweets you choose
as some can be detrimental to the fish like boiled sweets or those
containing lots of nuts or artificial flavours, the good thing about
many sweets is that they leak lots of flavour into the water when
they are submersed so the fish can detect the scent from a
considerable distance, I have caught many different fish on lots of
different sweets but most of all Carp as the majority of these baits
seem to fit in with this species of fish through size, shape and
sweetness, try filling a maggot feeder with a few chunks a raw jelly
as this will leak a good sweet scent into the water when fishing
sweets on the hook, experiment with different types of sweets from
foam to fudge but most of all enjoy the experience.

A double figured Mirror Carp caught on a jelly baby, just look at
the size of that rudder !
