Welcome to the Scunthorpe Police Angling clubs junior section, we
aim to provide all of the things that junior anglers need to know
about starting out in this great sport called Angling, This section
should grow into an informative range of articles and general tackle
talk, teaching all junior anglers and explaining the pitfalls that
they may encounter, arming them with the knowledge that they need to
grow into responsible, informed and all round good anglers.
Introduction
I
can just about remember when I started fishing, it was on the River
Mole at the tender age of six when I lived in the south of England
with my great granddad whom had a good eye for a decent swim and was
envied by many anglers whom thought him to be one of the best
anglers in the area at that time, He had an uncanny knack of finding
the better stamp of fish and was constantly pestered by others for
the recipe to his favourite paste bait, needless to say he never
gave it up not even to me, There is something magical about angling
when you are a young lad, when everything seems so big and full of
mystery, the anticipation of that first bite when you have hurriedly
set up your tackle and baited your swim, My great granddad always
used to say to me "never be in a hurry to catch your first fish",
"you have to prepare your swim and make sure that you are ready for
the changes that are sure to happen throughout the day", he was
right of course, I used to marvel at his ability thinking that one
day I could be just like him, knowing when to give the fish line and
when to bait the swim, but most importantly of all, what was
happening under the water and what I should do when the bites
diminish, He had sowed the seeds of angling within my soul forever
and I will never forget the four short years that we trudged the
Banks arriving by motorbike and sidecar with him grinning at me from
beneath his pork pie helmet just before he sped up flying over the
little hump back bridge making my stomach churn and lifting me from
my seat.
Lessons
The lessons that you learn when you are a youth can prepare you for
things that may happen in the future, angling was just a hobby to me
but it soon became apparent that it was a definite science and the
thirst for knowledge lead me in many different directions throughout
my angling apprenticeship, there are many levels of angling whether
you go fishing just to enjoy the surroundings or peace and quite or
you want to catch that fish of a lifetime you become a member of a
very special group those who would do almost anything to enjoy an
evening spent doing the thing that they love in natural , unspoilt
surroundings, the junior angler must learn many different skills to
train their mind into a certain way of thinking without them really
realising it, any information or new method must not only be learnt
but must be absorbed and worked out then used to their advantage or
altered in their own unique way, the old ways of angling have dwindled into past history as the
progression of tackle and information available to the junior angler
moves forwards at a fast pace, soon the angler realises that some
information that they have been told is not quite how it is
especially if they have evolved into the analytical angler that they
will have to become to gain a greater understanding of this sport.
