Follow these simple tips to find a new float rod that is right for
you !
Looking for a new piece of kit nowadays is like going through a
minefield blindfold , there is such an array of tackle that
sometimes it can be a bit of a headache just going through all of
the pieces and as I am sure you are aware some of them are there
just to catch the angler rather than the fish so you may find
yourself throwing caution to the wind and asking the tackle dealer
or reading some write up in one of the now many magazines on the
market , well !! , that’s ok if you can find someone with an
unbiased view ? , which is a bit of a rarity nowadays as many people
will point you in one direction or another for a specific reason and
it may not be the right one ? , so , I give you a few tips based on
my knowledge of angling through many years , work in writing for
several monthly's , tackle shop running and rod building experience
, which is totally non biased and should point you in the right
direction or at least make it a bit easier when the time comes to
find that piece of kit that you are looking for whether novice or
seasoned angler.
For a start lets get one thing sorted straight away , almost
everyone has some sort of a budget whether it be a figure that they
just want to spend up to or one which is , lets say flexible , let
me tell you now there is no such thing as a flexible budget and what
this means is that you are going to walk away with something that
may be no better than a cheaper version of the same thing and you
are going to be talked into how much you are going to spend , if you
know what I am saying , so don’t do it ! , go to the tackle shop and
just browse through the items at your leisure , get a feel for
what’s on the market at which price , makes , models and actions ,
after all no one would buy a top match rod at say £200 to £300 with
a light through action for general coarse type fishing when bigger
fish are the quarry , this is a specialized piece of kit built for
it’s forgiving action using fine hooks and lines with smaller fish
in mind , it may be ultra light and feel superb in the hand but try
to land decent fish all of the time on this rod and there may only
be one outcome , your out of pocket by a tidy sum and looking for a
new rod to do the job ? , which leads me to another good point , “a
rod for the job” , in this I am a great believer, there is no such
thing as an all rounder ? , a rod cannot be good for catching small
and large fish being two totally different animals , it is far
better to get two cheaper rods to do two different jobs than to
spend your cash on one dearer item to do both , but if you must buy
only one, go for a rod that powers up towards the mid section ,
giving you a soft top to play smaller fish with plenty of power at
the but end to tame the larger fish carrying light and heavy lines ,
there are such rods available and these come under the guise of an
all rounder ? But are far better for catching larger fish with the
soft top being engaged to set the hook , stop fish shedding the hook
and being forgiving when the fish may lunge during the fight and
when using barbless hooks or netting the fish , if you know and
trust an angler who may be in the know as it were then ask their
advice before purchasing any item of tackle and above all don’t buy
anything that dose not feel right for you.
keep all rods in a rod bag as it is not there just for show , it
detracts the moisture from the carbon when the rod has become wet
therefore stopping the carbon from rotting when and if the varnish
wears causing it to rot the carbon cloth and cause unexpected
breakages .
hopefully this has at least helped in some way to finding that rod
that you may need and most of all “within your budget”.
