Shakespeare Mach

I chose to test these two feeder rods to their limit on the
river Trent to ascertain their all round ability for casting
big feeders with extra lead and handling hard fighting river
fish.
I have given
these two rods a good looking over and on first inspection
noticed some differences that are likely to effect their
handling and general performance,
The Mach 1 is an impressive piece of kit for it's money
on the plus side it has a very good quality set of eyes with
a large diameter and titanium coating as well as a screw
down reel seat, On the minus it has a very soft handle
probably from a softer material being used within it's core
to reduce carbon costs this making it flex under pressure
whilst casting or playing fish and it seems to have a bit of
a dogs leg where the softer top meets the stiffer section
when pressure is applied however this does not hinder it's
general performance in any way, it has a very stiff almost
bullish action that is perfect for casting leads, feeders or
playing big fish on heavy lines, it comes with three carbon
tips that are perfect for all of your river fishing and an
RRP of £49.99 making it a superb buy.

Garbolino Squad 13 FT Power Feeder
It was hard to separate these two rods on value or performance,
On the plus side the Garbolino has a screw down reel seat and full
cork handle with the same material being used right through it's
core so it does not flex when playing fish or casting it also has a
slightly softer tip action which is handy for playing fish on
lighter lines and was smooth right through to meeting the stiff mid
section, On the minus it has a lower quality set of eyes that are of
smaller diameter than the Mach 1 and I found that the screw down
reel seat did tend to work loose when the rod was under sustained
pressure when playing fish although when I tightened down the
fitting with some force this alleviated the problem, It has a
slightly smoother action than the mach 1 which I preferred but has
masses of power in the butt to mid section when required, The
Garbolino comes with three carbon tips that are perfect for river
fishing and has a RRP of £54.99, Both of these rods performed
surprisingly well casting 4oz to 5oz and catching good Chub on a
flooded river Trent, they would not be out of place in any rod
collection. |
